Effective October 31st, 2024, Morrisson-Reeves Library will be discontinuing our subscription to Hoopla.  We have made this decision based on Hoopla’s unsustainable cost-per-use model. Instead, we will increase our investment in our Libby/Overdrive offerings.

We understand that this change may be disappointing, and we apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. We are committed to providing you with a high-quality digital library experience.

Why is Morrisson-Reeves Library discontinuing Hoopla?

In November 2023, we piloted a decreased Hoopla “cap”, limiting the number of items patrons could stream per month. However, as more people discovered Hoopla, our costs continued to grow to the point where we exceeded our budgeted amount for Hoopla for this year in July.

Although it is free for patrons to use, Hoopla’s cost-per-circulation model means that MRL pays a fee for every item a patron checks out. So, the more Hoopla gets used, the more it costs the library. Each time a patron borrows a title or streams a movie (even if they don’t use or watch it), the library pays a fee ranging from $1.99 to $3.99. This model is not sustainable for MRL because as more people discover and use Hoopla, the cost to MRL increases uncontrollably.

Our plan moving forward in 2025 is to focus our digital investment into Libby/Overdrive to provide more eBooks and eAudiobooks. This allows MRL to control spending while still allowing patrons to borrow a variety of digital materials. This change will help the library align its digital offerings with patron needs and ensure long-term financial stability.

I want to save the titles of what I borrowed on Hoopla, can I do that?

If you want to save what you have read/used on Hoopla, you can view your Hoopla borrowing history by going to “My Account” in the upper left of the screen and clicking on “History.” You can then print this page.

Want to save your favorites? Click on “Favorites” in “My Account” to see the authors or titles you have marked as a Favorite.

The wait for materials on Libby can be long!

We encourage you to place holds even when the wait time appears to be long.  MRL patrons get first access to MRL-purchased items and you may get it much faster than expected.  In addition, as hold numbers increase on items, we purchase more digital copies for patrons to checkout.

The eBooks and eAudiobooks on Libby are licensed by the publishers for use by one borrower at a time. To reduce wait times, MRL has doubled our investment into Libby materials this year by purchasing additional copies and new titles of eBooks and eAUdiobooks. In 2025, we are further increasing the Libby/Overdrive budget to purchase new titles to expand the collection and reduce wait time.

Where can I stream movies and television?

With your MRL account, you have access to Kanopy. Kanopy is a video-streaming platform dedicated to thoughtful and thought-provoking films. We are providing unlimited access to children’s titles.
