An Evening with Author, Mary Ellen Donat
August 17 | 6 pm | Virtually Broadcast on Zoom

Mary Ellen Donat has always had a special fondness for family lore – the quirkier the better. She has incorporated many of those oral accounts into historical fiction. Smiles is loosely based on her parents’ early lives and unlikely love.

A native of Richmond, IN, she began her professional writing career with a weekly history column for a Gannett newspaper, where she was also a features reporter. As a “nontraditional” student (i.e.: in her 40s), she received an honors liberal arts degree from Indiana University.

About Her Book – SMILES
Based on oral family lore, and a good amount of gossip, Smiles is the fictionalized true story of improbable love. It tells parallel tales of the vastly diverse personalities and early experiences of handsome, popular Miles Smythe and plain, shy Theta Whittle.
