Remarkable Books Under 200 Pages is a book club where we discuss a book read by the group. The club is free and open to the public. Remarkable Book Club meets in the Bard Room at MRL on the dates listed below.

Books can be borrowed from MRL and may be picked up at the Information Services Desk a month before the conversation. Please join the discussion by signing up to attend with Information Services.

On Juneteenth by Annette Gordon-Reed

Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 11 a.m.

The sweeping story of Juneteenth’s integral importance to American history, as told by a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian. On January 1, 1863, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became law. But, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that Texas observed it. That was when many slaves there first learned they were free. It is now a National Holiday.

Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging by Sebastian Junger

Tuesday August 13, 2024 at 11 a.m.

Humans have a strong instinct to belong to small groups defined by clear purpose and understanding. This tribal connection has been lost in modern society, but regaining it may be the key to our psychological survival. Tribal society has been exerting an almost gravitational pull on Westerners for hundreds of years, and the reason lies deep in our evolutionary past as a communal species. ‘Tribe’ explains why we are stronger when we come together, and how that can be achieved even in today’s divided world.
